Marina Hatsopoulos is Board Chair of Levitronix Technologies, the worldwide leader in magnetically-levitated bearingless motor technology, and President of Hellenic Innovation Network, which serves as a bridge for tech startups expanding from Greece to the U.S. She is a Trustee of Berklee College of Music in Boston, as well as ALBA Business School and Athens College, both in Greece, and on the MIT Corporation Visiting Committee for the Department of Mechanical Engineering. She is founding advisor of MIT startup Inkbit. She is on the Advisory Board of the Nantucket Conference, MIT Enterprise Forum Greece (now called StartSmart SEE), Eurobank’s EGG accelerator, and Mindspace Entrepreneurship Program.
Ms. Hatsopoulos is a public speaker on topics related to entrepreneurship at MIT, Brown, and other institutions, and her business writing has been published in Venturebeat, The Observer, CEOWorld Magazine, Design News, Time Compression Technologies, and Jumpstart: Launching Your Business Venture, Profitably and Successfully (Aspatore, 2003). She gave a Tedx talk about the opportunity for startups to grow the economy in Greece. Her prize-winning essays and short stories have been published in The Missouri Review, Antioch Review, Bellevue Literary, Santa Monica Review, and other literary journals.
Ms. Hatsopoulos was Founding CEO of Z Corporation, an early leader in 3D printing out of MIT, which was the first place winner of the "New England Technology Fast 50" for 2001, a ranking of the 50 fastest-growing technology companies in the region, and was also listed in the Inc 500 ranking of the nation’s 500 fastest-growing private companies by Inc Magazine. At the time of sale, Z Corp. was the technology leader and had reached the #2 spot in market share.
Ms. Hatsopoulos has also served as a member of the National Board of Research & Innovation for the Republic of Cyprus. She was a Director of Cynosure (NASDAQ), a $400 million leader in the laser aesthetics market which was sold to Hologic for $1.65B in 2017. She was a Director and investor in Dear Kate, which makes performance apparel, and Tea Forte, a luxury tea brand which was sold to Sara Lee. She served as Director of the GSI Group (NASDAQ, now called Novanta), a $300 million supplier of precision motion control products, and laser-based advanced manufacturing systems for the global semiconductor and industrial markets. She was a Director of Contex Holding, a $100 million leading manufacturer of large-format scanners and software.
Prior to co-founding Z Corporation, she worked in corporate finance for the Energy Industry at The Chase Manhattan Bank in New York, negotiating $2.5 billion in financing deals. She pursued more operational roles in her work at various Thermo Electron Corporation subsidiaries, heading up special projects in Mergers and Acquisitions, Marketing and Project Management.
She was also on the Award Screening Committee for the $500,000 Lemelson-MIT Inventor Award. In addition, as Chair of the Committee on Finance and Investment of the 120,000-member American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), she oversaw its budgets and investments. She served on the Board of Trustees of The Buckingham Browne & Nichols School in Cambridge, Massachusetts and on the Board of The Bridge Boston Charter School in Dorchester.
Ms. Hatsopoulos graduated with a B.A. in Pure Mathematics and a B.A. in Music from Brown University in 1987 (Phi Beta Kappa, Magna Cum Laude, Mathematics Prize, and Faculty Fellowship). She received her M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from MIT in 1993 (Sigma Xi).
Ms. Hatsopoulos and Z Corp. were honored with Mass. High Tech’s 2001 All-Star Award for Hardware and profiled in Forbes, Fortune, Fast Company, Boston Business Journal, The Boston Globe, Boston Magazine, a Boston Museum of Science podcast, and MIT Technology Review.
Her work as President of Hellenic Innovation Network supporting Greek startups was written about in MIT News, eKathimerini, another eKathimerini article, and on Greek EPT TV (2020). For this work, she was awarded the insignia of the Officer of the Gold Cross of the Order of Beneficence by H.E. the President of the Hellenic Republic, as reported in eKathimerini. She was profiled in a documentary called "The Roads of the Greeks" (Episode 9: Boston Greeks at 32:30). Ms. Hatsopoulos was also honored with the 2024 Argo Award for Innovation by the President of the Hellenic Republic.
